Dandelion Herbal Coffee Recipe

dandelion flowers in a field

I make this Dandelion Herbal “Coffee” recipe regularly!

Why do I love it so much?

Dandelion root and chicory both contain inulin, which provides food for healthy gut flora. Dandelion, chicory, and burdock are also traditionally used to support liver health, which then promotes healthy skin. This tea is also wonderful when you’re feeling bloated, as the bitter flavors support the digestive system and dandelion is a gentle diuretic.

The recipe is super adaptable, so I recommend trying it and making it your own!

Dandelion Herbal Coffee Recipe

  • 5 oz. dried dandelion root*

  • 5 oz. dried chicory root*

  • 5 oz. dried burdock root

  • 1.5 oz. cinnamon chips

  • (Optional) Up to .5 oz. other roots and/or mushrooms***

  1. Heat the oven to 275 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. Measure all your ingredients by weight with a kitchen scale.

  3. Put the dandelion, chicory, and burdock roots onto a baking sheet. Slowly roast the roots for approximately 1 hour, stirring every 15-20 minutes. You can roast them for longer if you wish, up to 2 hours. They’re ready when they’ve browned and smell toasty, roasty, and fragrant.

  4. Remove the roots from the oven, and let them cool.

  5. In a food processor**, add the cooled dandelion, chicory, burdock roots, cinnamon chips, and optional ingredients. Pulse until the herbs look like coffee grounds (not too fine!)

  6. Store in a glass jar with a snug lid.

  7. To use, prepare as you would a cup of coffee. I make it as a French Press, or sometimes in a regular tea strainer. The French Press is my favorite!

  8. Enjoy with milk, plant milk, and sweetener if desired.

*You can buy both dandelion root and chicory root pre-roasted. If they’re pre-roasted, you can roast the burdock roots alone and add the dandelion and chicory with the cinnamon chips.

**You can use a Vitamix to grind the roots, but I find the Vitamix doesn’t grind the roots as evenly as the food processor.

***Optional Additions

This recipe is really flexible, and I recommend playing around to figure out the right blend for you! Here’s some optional herbs to add to your beautiful blend:

  • Reishi mushroom (for immune support and calming the spirit — no more than ¼ to ½ oz, as otherwise the blend will be quite bitter. Start small; you can always add more.)

  • Chaga Mushroom (great immune support)

  • Sarsaparilla root (really nice to add for folks with skin issues)

  • Cacao nibs (up to 1.5 oz); gives a chocolatey buzz

  • He Shou Wu (great for skin and blood nourishment)

  • Dang Gui (a small amount to support hormones)

  • Cardamom (a small amount brings out the cinnamon)

  • Astragalus (builds the immune system)

Many of these roots often come sliced, so it is good to grind them up in the food processor before adding them to the dandelion, chicory, and burdock roots.

Enjoy!!!
